Aloha Wai'anae Coast Residents!
I'm Cedric Asuega Gates, a lifelong resident of 96792 and a proud graduate of Kamaile Elementary, Wai'anae Intermediate, Wai'anae High School, YouthBuild Honolulu, and Leeward Community College-Wai'anae Moku. Inspired by the loss of my parents to health complications, I founded the nonprofit Active Hawaii in 2011 to promote unity and wellness in our community which led me into public service.
As your State Representative for District 45, I've secured over $250 million for local projects and passed crucial legislation to improve our lives. Now, I'm running for State Senate to continue advocating for our community's needs and creating generational change.
As your State Senator, I will continue to advocate for our community, focusing on the following key areas:
Cost of Living:
Affordable Housing: Support and fund low-cost housing, expedite DHHL leases, and develop rent-to-own units.
Homeownership Support: Increase financial support for first-time homeowners and streamline access to USDA loans and OHA funding.
Lower Living Costs: Reduce utility rates, vehicle registration fees, and income taxes and other tax burdens.
Local Economy:
Economic Diversification: Invest in technology, agriculture, healthcare, sustainable tourism, and environmental protection.
Education and Job Pipeline: Create career pathways for high school and college graduates through partnerships with local businesses and unions.
Small Business Support: Increase access to capital, support entrepreneurship, and expand resources for online businesses.
Education:
Provide resources to teachers and students, including PPE, safety training, and improved internet access for disadvantaged students.
Simplify access to DOE food distributions for working parents and families with children in different schools.
Engage the community in discussions about the future of education post-COVID-19.
Public Infrastructure & Services:
Finish existing transportation projects in 96792, extend the fifth lane from Haleakala Ave. to Hakimo Rd., Open our emergency access routes for daily-use.
Safety Measures: Implement flashing beacons at all unprotected crosswalks especially near our schools, ADA-compliant sidewalks, and increase street lighting across the Westside.
Public Services: Expand services at Wai'anae City Hall and extend Wai'anae Refuse hours to prevent illegal dumping.
Native Hawaiian Advancement:
Land Trust Revenues: Expedite the distribution of Public Land Trust Revenues for Native Hawaiians.
Cultural Programs: Increase funding for programs that support Hawaiian values, language, culture, and history.
Self-Governance: Honor and respect the rights of Native Hawaiians seeking self-governance.
Homelessness:
Housing Programs: Increase funding for Rapid Rehousing Vouchers, 'Ohana Zones, and Work-to-Rent housing.
Non-Profit Support: Fund organizations providing outreach and resources for the homeless.
Balanced Enforcement: Ensure enforcement and social services work together to protect public safety and provide assistance to our houseless population.
Mahalo nui loa for your continued support in my journey to serve our community of 96792. Together, we can create a thriving future for the Leeward Coast for generations to come. I humbly ask for you and your Ohana’s vote on August 10th!
With Aloha,
Cedric Asuega Gates
